An Tuireann, which does superb food and interesting exhibitions, has closed without warning. The staff were told not to turn up for work. D Stewart and Co, the ironmongers which has been there for donkeys is closing too. Now I’ve just heard that Island Outdoors and Skye Batiks are closing too. There’s talk of a major supermarket brand coming to the town to provide some competition for the CO-OP. Surely the wasting disease of out of town shopping hasn’t reached the capital of Skye? It’s a sad day for independent retailers on the island. Now that Island Outdoors is closing, the nearest gear shop is 914 at Eilean Donan castle. It’s a damn good shop though.
