its the southern storm season again
Tue, Mar 11, 2008
It’s the time of year when those in the far south of this Sceptred Isle are singled out for the worst storm of the winter. Not sure why this seems to happen. In the far north we’ve already had 100mph winds and things blown all over the place. I was in Stornoway a couple of weeks ago and could hardly stand up in the main street it was so wild. The Ullapool ferry came in early, having turned back mid-Minch. On the way to a business appointment in Glasgow, while waiting for the bus, the driver of the local bus said he was coming round the head of Loch Ainort and a gust of wind blew his doors open and the resulting vacuum nearly pulled him off his seat and it was all he could do to haul on the wheel to stop from ending up in the loch.
But that’s too “normal” to be reported by the southern press. So instead we get endless reports of a monster storm heading for southern England. Government agencies warned people to stay away from the coasts until Wednesday. Nanny state gone mental! In the end a puff of wind came, blew over a few trees and a child’s climbing frame and went to find somewhere more interesting to lay waste. One good thing that did come out of the annual brouhaha was the comments site on the BBC.
