grub on the go

Thanks to Alan for the tipoff about the new Turmat distributor, Outdoors Grub. I used Turmat on my ML assessment and it was even tastier than the Expedition Foods meals although it’s a bit bulkier to carry. My all time favourite is Porridge and Strawberries though. I had this in a snow hole for breakfast and it was utterly wonderful. It’s so good I now make my own, carrying the mix in a big and bunging hot water into it. I like the way Expedition Foods give you the ingredients online. I had a look at Mountain House in the shop in Braemar once but it had hydrogenated vegetable oil in it, so I declined it:
“Vegetable seeds are cleaned and bleached to remove all colour, taste, smells and impurities. The liquid vegetable oil is then heated to high temperatures and a catalyst (commonly nickel, but could be palladium, platinum or rhodium) is added. Hydrogen is bubbled through the liquid. The mixture is then filtered to remove the metal, leaving hydrogenated vegetable oil”
In the name of the wee man! Who thought up that mess? How bored do you have to be to remove all goodness from something and pump it full of heavy metals instead and have the cheek to pass it off as food? The mind boggles.
Anyway, I’ve just found out I get a 15% discount at Be-Well Expedition Foods as I’m in MLTA, so I might try them out. They’re half the price of Turmat so I’m not holding out much hope but apparently TRAIL magazine rates them quite highly, as if that means anything. Their porridge stuff is about 20g heavier than the Expedition Foods one and about 70p cheaper but they don’t give calorie ratings. With 15% off it’s worth a look though.
